Bukit View Secondary School

Bukit View Secondary School (BtVSS) (simplified Chinese百德中学traditional Chinese百德中學pinyinBăidé Zhōngxué) is a Government-funded secondary school, located in Bukit Batok, on the western part of Singapore. The school aimed to nurture creativitypassion and resilience in all her students to be people with moral integrity and are responsible to self and society.

School Crest

The school emblem takes the shape of a yellow circle with four equilateral triangles inlaid in the centre of the circle. The first green triangle forms the initial 'B' of Bukit and the remaining one in blue represents the initial 'V' of View. The peaks of the three green triangles form 2 letters 'S' representing Secondary School. The yellow circle represents the brilliance of the sun that signifies our aspirations for a bright future through education. The three green triangles (mountains) symbolise the broad and solid educational foundation on which the pupils will continue to scale higher peaks in their studies, with determination, and to the best of their abilities. The blue triangle (sea) represents the virtue of magnanimity of our pupils. It is also the deep sea of virtues and morals that our pupils have to acquire through education.
The school's Chinese name, 百德 also means One Hundred Virtues.

History

The building of the school began on September 30, 1984 and was completed on December 29, 1985. She started classes with 450 students in the Secondary One and Two levels, and a teaching body of 15 on January 3, 1986, headed by the school's first principal, Mr Ow Chiong Hoo. In the same year, the school saw the first Investiture of the BtVSS Student Council, the formation of the School Military Band and the Library. The school was fully functional with the completion of the outdoor fitness stations and the landscaped garden. In 1987, Bukit View held their first Track-and-Field Meet, and also was the convenor of the West Zone Secondary Schools Badminton Tournament. The school facility also installed an electric kiln installed for students to explore their artistic talents through pottery. On July 15, 1988 Bukit View was officially opened by Mr Chai Chong Yii, MP for Bukit Batok. A school lecture hall was built and officially opened by the newly appointed MP for Bukit Batok Dr Ong Chit Chung on 6 November 1989. In 1997 Bukit View also participated in the 2-day Pesta Sukan National 10's Rugby Tournament for the first time.
On November 13, 1999 Bukit View, along with 7 other schools in Singapore and the National Institute of Education adopted the two-hectare Mandai Forest near Upper Seletar Reservoir Park to help restore the forest patch that was devastated an invasion of the Smilax-variable creeper plant on its grounds, over the years. The adoption project also planned to use the forest habitat restoration to facilitate hands-on learning of forest ecology and biodiversity and equip students and teachers with field-based learning strategies. It was also an opportunity for students from different schools to collaborate on a project that is both about learning and saving the natural environment.
The abbreviation BtVSS was created for the school to prevent constant confusion between the school and Bedok View Secondary School since they share the abbreviation of BVSS in official records. Late 2007, the school held a uniform design competition among the students. The winning entry was a brown theme; the shirt is white with the school's logo and name sewn on with brown shorts or pants for boys, for girls, they have the option between culotte and pinafore. The pinafore differs from the standard, having a more vest-like appearance. Student numbers in 2008 had also reduced to 4 Express classes, 2 Normal (Academic) classes and 1 Normal (Technical) class.
A student team led by Madam Maziyan Abdullah, participated in the 2008 World Media Masters on 28 March 2008, organised by IT Leisure and Education and supported by Creative Community Singapore, an initiative of the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts (MICA). The team, along with those from 15 other schools participating in the programme, had been provided with professional training on producing computer games since August 2007, enabling them to experience real-life computer game production work and a chance for selected winning team to market their game product commercially international.

BLS is an Extended Family where teachers act in place of parents for students’ learning of knowledge, skills and values for further education, work and life ahead.
BLS structure is CCA-centric (not form-class-centric) where the CCA is the basic familial unit that each student belongs to for the development of skills and values and rootedness to the school, community and country.  It is where leadership and 21st century competencies are nurtured and exercised, and good character formed through its structure of discipline, activities and training.  The CCA-centric approach is our way of strengthening the Singapore Spirit – rootedness to the school through enhanced CCA and to the community through CCA (Values-in-Action).
The Academic Programme will be crafted as a social experience that is aligned to learning with purpose – building the foundation for further education towards personal dreams and aspirations.  The focus is to engage students in purposeful learning and foster the joy of learning in the classroom.
In BLS, besides the Academic and CCA Programmes, the Student Development Programme offers modules which cater to students’ interests and needs.  Students make choices to discover their strengths and passions, explore their career options and chart their own learning to build up a meaningful portfolio to support the pursuit of their dreams and aspirations.    This programme also seeks to bring out the joy of learning and nurture entrepreneurial dare as students make options to discover, experience and aspire.
In BLS, we don’t just teach.
We create possibilities and help our students realise their dreams and aspirations!

School as a community, provides an environment to educate character through a customised socialisation process that aims to bring about a holistic education that suitably prepares all students for a good future. In educating a child, the hearts, minds and souls of children are, have been, and will always be our work. This is our commitment to our students.

The five school values of Integrity, Value every Individual, Be Responsible, Passion for Learning and Strive for Excellence anchors our actions as we strive to achieve the school vision.

  • A Learning SchoolHow should a learning school look like? In order that the students are well prepared to become a 21st century workforce, a learning school will foster a culture of collaborations which will promote team learning and enable collective intelligence in the co-creation of knowledge. Hence many academic programmes are not only of high standards, but with an emphasis on learning through inquiry learning and inventing thinking in project work and through the use of information technology when appropriate.

  • A Caring CommunityFor learning to be effective, it is pertinent to encourage and cultivate a culture of care that promotes a safe and fun environment for all students. In order to achieve this, we are committed to fostering caring relationships with the students and amongst all staff. The BPSS big family believes in inclusive education for all, respecting individual rights and differences, always affirming and creating many platforms to share our successes. We aspire to be a caring community where people are treated with dignity and respect and everyone is a valued member in that community.

  • Contributing CitizensTo prepare our students as contributing citizens of tomorrow, BPSS seeks to nurture thinking and committed students capable of meeting future challenges. They will possess strength of character to deal with adversity and respond positively to complex changes in our society and country.

  • When our students graduate from BPSS, they will not only develop their talents and lead productive lives, but also have good morals as the foundation to lead ethical lives.

Bendemeer Secondary School

Bendemeer Secondary School was located along busy Serangoon Road for over 20 years before it moved to its current location at 1 St Wilfred Road.

Formerly, the land was owned by Mr Hoo Ah Kay, better known as ‘Whampoa’. There was a famous garden on this land – the Whampoa Gardens – a popular place of interest for residents. On Whampoa’s death in 1880, the property was bought by Mr Seah Liang Seah. It was on this very land that Bendemeer Secondary School was built on.

The school was established on 3rd January 1977. It functioned in Beng Wan Primary School for three months before it moved to its new building on 7th March. The school was then officially declared open by the Member of Parliament for Kolam Ayer, Mr Sidek Saniff, on 5th April 1979. The new building was built at a cost of 6 million dollars, inclusive of furniture and equipment.

The classroom block had 28 classrooms with 2 teachers’ room, prefects’ room, a sick bay and general office on the ground floor and a central library on the first floor. The Science block had 3 science laboratories, 4 Home Economic rooms, an AVA room, resource rovtoms and 4 special rooms. The technical block had 1 electrical, 2 woodwork and 2 metal workshops. Also located in the same block were the technical drawing room and 2 Art rooms.

The school population was only 500 in 1977, but averaged 1800 by 1980, making it one of the biggest secondary schools in Singapore. It was also a Pre-University centre, providing commercial subjects to an average of 400 Pre-U students from 1980 to 1995.

It became a single-session school in 1998 and in the same year, relocated to its new premises at St Wilfred Road. A few years before that, it was decided that two schools – Whampoa Secondary and Bendemeer Secondary Schools – would merge. The old Whampoa school building was demolished and students from the former school joined our Bendemeerians. The new school, built on the former site of Whampoa Secondary School, was finally ready in 1998.

Build at a cost of 22 million dollars, the new premises was officially handed over on 23rd May 1998. It has 36 classrooms, 6 science laboratories, a large school hall with viewing galleries, a CD shelter, a multi-media resource library, ample special rooms and CCA room, a Conference Room, a Fitness room, an air-conditioned Career Guidance room and a Counseling room. Special facilities for the handicapped like an elevator and ramps are also available.

In 1998, during the June holidays, the entire school, carrying plaques of our School Vision, School Mission, Our Shared Values and The Bendemeerian Code, walked from the old school site to the new site, marking a new chapter in Bendemeer’s history. The School was officially opened at its site on 9th Sept 1998.

In 2010, work was underway in the construction of an indoor Sports Hall. The ISH was completed in 2011 and officially opened on 8th Sept 2011.

In July 2011, the grass in the school field was replaced with synthetic turf. It helps to provide a better playing surface during sports activities.

Bendemeer Secondary
To be a school that ignites a passion for learning. The staff and students are encouraged to be creative and actively engaged in seeking solutions for the improvement of the community and country. We envision our graduates as confident youths who are equipped with skills and perspectives that make them relevant for their generation.

Every student can shine
Every child has a talent. The staff focuses on helping students believe in their own talents and abilities. By so doing, the students would be empowered to see possibilities in all circumstances. We believe that with empowered minds, our students would be inspired to be positive contributors to society.

We place a strong emphasis
On Character Development and National Education. Our students are taught to love people and their country. Our core values act as a plumb line which sets a standard for the behaviour of staff and students.

Bartley Secondary School

Hey guys, sincere apologies but I will be away for the next couple of days as I'll be travelling. Here's the last post before my flight :)

The school was founded on 18 February 1952 with Mr Chua Leong Hean as the first principal who also designed the School Crest.
The enrolment was 81 boys and 10 girls. In 1955 the science laboratories, school hall and tuck shop were built. In 1956, the female population of Bartley was transferred to the newly completed Cedar Girls' Secondary School. The school then became a boys' school in the secondary section. Post-secondary classes were also started in the same year, and female students were admitted to that level. The school also pioneered the National Police Cadet Corps with the first unit being established in 1959.

In 1992 the school moved to the former Mt. Vernon Secondary School premises while a new school was built. In 1995 Bartley moved to new premises at 10 Jalan Bunga Rampai. In December 1995, a new principal, Mrs Tan So Wah, was appointed, the first woman principal. The school admitted girls at secondary level again in 1995, when it moved to the new site. Pre-university classes were phased out from the school in 1996. The school was upgraded (PRIME) in its present site from 2003 to 2005. Additional classes, learning suites and an enlarged school hall were added to the school.

Since Mrs Tan So Wah, the school has appointed Principals Mrs Dolly Ong (2002–2007) and Mrs Mary Bay (2008–2014) and currently Mr Mohd Azhar Bin Terimo (2015-present).

One of the stronger areas of Bartley Secondary School is the Student Leadership Development Programme and the CCA Programme. The school has the Student Council Board, Class Committee Council and Co-curricular Activity Leaders (formed by the top two leaders from all Uniform Groups, Performing Arts, Sports and Games and Clubs and Societies). Each of these group of Student Leaders receive training and development through their stint of duties and responsibilities in their respective areas. The annual Combined Student Leadership Camp was started in 2006. In June and November, the top two or three student leaders from every CCA come together to learn and grow together as part of their leadership training. The Combined Student Leaders Investiture was conceptualized from 2007 and it remains a highlight in the School Calendar.

The school was banded for the first time in MOE's annual school ranking exercise in 2009. The school attributed this success to a lower student:teacher ratio.

In 2010, the school received the MOE Master Plan Award 2010, Band 9 in Express and Band 5 in Normal Academic Course. Also the school achieved SAA for Academic (Express), SAA for Uniformed Group (5th Award) and SAA for Aesthetics (1st Award).

In 2011, the class, 2E2, was the winner for the Teachers' Day Dedication on 5, which dedication messages was showcased on the Channel 5 Television Show, The Noose on 1 September 2011. The dedication was filmed with Andre Chichak at Bartley Secondary School.

In 2012, air-conditioners were installed in the classrooms of 8 graduating classes.

Since 1991, the school has had Pastoral Care and Career Guidance (PCCG) and Cognitive Research Trust (CoRT) programmes. In 2004, the School Heritage Gallery was launched by alumnus Ron Sim, CEO of OSIM Pte Ltd. In 2009, the NE Corner was launched with the goal of engaging students with current affairs both globally and locally.

On 24 June 1964, the Minister of Education, Ong Pang Boon, declared the school open as "Balestier Hill Integrated Secondary Technical School". It was one of the first six secondary technical schools to be opened in Singapore, and was an "integrated" school because it had both Chinese and English streams. The school was located at Balestier Hill, named after Joseph Balestier, the first United States Consul of Singapore. Cheong Pak Lo was the principal. In 1975, the school song was rewritten by two teachers, Chew Y.C. and Yeo S.B.

In 1986, the Chinese stream was discontinued; the year after, the Alumni Association had its inaugural AGM. In 1992, the school was renamed Balestier Hill Secondary School and relocated from Balestier Road to Dunearn Road to allow the building of new premises. In 1994, the first Balestierian of the Year Award was given to the pupil who contributed service to the school and performed best in studies and ECA. In 1997, a handing-over ceremony took place and the school began operations at the new site. The next year, the old school crest was changed to its present form. In 2000, the school was opened by Sinnakaruppan, MP, Kreta Ayer - Tanglin GRC (Moulmein Div). In 2001, Rangoon Secondary School merged with Balestier Hill Secondary School.

In 2007, Monk's Hill Secondary School merged with Balestier Hill Secondary School. The merged school operates from the current site at 11, Novena Rise.

In January 2017, Balestier Hill Secondary School would merge with Beatty Secondary School, due to a lack of students in both schools. The merged school would be known as Beatty Secondary School.

Admiralty Secondary sets sail for future with new Space
- June 03 2016, Clement Yong

The future is here at Admiralty Secondary School in the north, where a high-tech space equipped with gadgets such as drones, robots and 3D printers was launched yesterday.

Called iCt Space, it is about the size of two to three classrooms and designed to be an interactive learning space for students to come up with solutions to real- life problems faced by industry or the community.

While ICT usually refers to information and communications technology, Admiralty Secondary principal Toh Thiam Chye said it can also stand for "I can tinker".

The hope is that the space will encourage its students to be more willing to experiment and go beyond conventional constraints, he added.

Students will work with industry partners such as the Robotics and Maker Academy (RMA), Kurve Automation, GoFlyKite and Intel Singapore.

They will be able to learn to apply skills such as robotics or programming.

"It is the way of the future and the new education eco-system," RMA director Zhou Changjiu said.

"These are necessary skillsets students must have as we look to the future."

Students will work with community partners such as community hospitals, senior citizen corners and even MRT stations on projects in three areas: transport, senior citizens and hospitals.

Mr Toh said: "This is in line with Singapore's quest to be a Smart Nation. At the same time, the values of compassion and empathy can be brought home to the students."

Mr Wilson Tai, 19, an electrical electronics engineering student at Singapore Polytechnic who was back at his alma mater to witness the launch, said: "Having a physical space for this specific purpose really facilitates interactions between the students and helps the (design) process go a lot faster."

Secondary 2 student Gustinne Castillo, 13, agreed: "With a bigger space, we have a more suitable environment to pursue our passions."

Said Mr Toh: "It is very rare for a secondary school to have so many partners from both the public and private sectors, as well as tertiary institutions. We are truly blessed."

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan was the guest of honour at the event.
